Caran d’Ache paid rich tribute to Chinese culture earlier this year with the launch of a new limited edition. It uses the ancestral technique of Chinese lacquer in evoking the spirituality of a civilization rich in symbolism. China celebrated the New Year under the sign of the monkey. To mark the occasion, Caran d’Ache unveiled this new creation, titled Year of the Monkey that blends the arts of Chinese lacquer and Haute Ecriture.
According to Chinese folklore, on New Year’s Eve the Emperor of Jade called all the animals to an unusual meeting, but only twelve accepted the invitation. So the Emperor gave them a special gift: a whole year would be dedicated to each animal and would carry its name. Endowed with a thirst for learning and a vivid imagination, the monkey is one of the most creative signs of the Chinese zodiac. These passionate beings have a creative mind and love a good challenge. Their intelligence and proven cleverness nurture social relationships, thus promising an exceptionally ingenious year.
The animated figure of the monkey leaps out in bright yellow Chinese lacquer on a glossy black background that has been patiently applied layer after layer according to ancestral tradition. The monkey’s shimmering coat, its agile long arms and expressive face are depicted with the utmost delicacy on the body of the writing instrument, presenting a design that is typically Asian in character.
Endowed with the distinctive features of the Maison Caran d’Ache, the attributes of the instruments, as well as the individual numbers engraved, are covered in yellow gold. Gold symbolizes the sun and light, a sign of prosperity and a good omen in Asia. The Year of the Monkey edition is limited to 888 pieces as a subtle reference to Chinese culture.
The Year of the Monkey limited edition writing instruments join the other exceptional pieces in the Caran d’Ache Artist Collection. Produced in noble materials, it is a superb embodiment of the company’s expertise. The pens are available in limited editions of 888 fountain pens and 888 roller pens with gold-plated trim.
