Inspired by the Arabian Gulf’s passion and deep rooted ties with the pearl, Robert Wan in partnership with Bahraini designer Fadia Al Zain launched the Qatar pearl collection at the recently concluded Doha Jewelry and Watch Exhibition (DJWE). The collection underscores the cultural significance of the pearl and the sacrifices of the brave divers to retrieve them.
The story behind the creation of the Qatari collection really lies in the connection with the sea. The jewelry pieces each entail a deep story highlighting the courage of the divers of yore bringing each part of this collection to life.
The Mureyat Rowdha is a long necklace inspired by the diver’s vision of his bride’s outfit on their wedding day. While the the Comb of Happiness is a comb inspired by the reflection of the stars in the night on the pearls.
Um al Zain, a day-to-night brooch is inspired by a diver’s memory of his mother’s elegance and Huyool Hessa, are baby anklets inspired by the diver’s deep longing for his children and their sweet laughter.
From a very young age, Fadia discovered her passion for pearls. It tied her to her home, linked her to her heritage, and celebrated her love for her culture. She is after all the great-granddaughter of one of Bahrain’s earliest pearl merchants, as well as the granddaughter of Mr. Ali Al Zain.
After graduating from the New England School of Arts and Design with a degree in spatial and interior design, her journey led her to follow in the steps of her great-grandfather and grandfather, and pave her own way into the world of jewellery making.
